NJ Elite goes 5 - 0 before falling in  the semi's at Rutgers MVP

The 2008 edition of New Jersey Elite opened their 2008 season going 5 – 0 before falling in the semi-finals and finishing their first tournament at 5 – 1. The 2007 team was one of the youngest ever and lost key players such as NJ Player of the Year Pete Coleman, Chatham/Navy and Princeton bound Chad Wiedmaier, Delbarton, so they were anxious to see where they were versus last year. It didn’t figure to be any easier in ‘08 as Elite found themselves in a division with familiar foe, 4-time Group 4 Champion Hunterdon Central, long-time rival Maryland Fireballs and Pennsylvania power, Penn Charter.

Elite opened with uneven play but pulled out a win against the more experienced Albany, NY based Roadhawks. Next up was Pennsylvania based Bucks Select. Elite found more of their rhythm and recorded their second win. The second half of the day started with a match against the Maryland Fireballs. In their 12 year history Elite has had some titanic battles against one of Maryland’s premier teams and this one promised to be no different. The intensity level was evident as the teams traded early goals before Elite exploded and recorded a 3 goal win in what would
have to be considered one of the better wins ever against Maryland. Next up was Penn Charter who was ranked 11th in Pennsylvania and lost in the state semi’s Vs Malvern Prep who finished 2008 ranked 11th nationally and 2nd in Pennsylvania. Penn Charter jumped all over Elite early with 2 quick goals and added another just before the half. Elite came out a different team in the second half. The defense was intense and focused grabbing ground balls, executing clears, shutting down PC’s potent offense giving Elite’s blossoming offense a chance to work. The offense took advantage being patient but crisp and opportunistic. Quick ball movement created openings and allowed Elite to score 5 unanswered goals in the 5 – 3 upset. The final regular game was against Hunterdon Central but Elite shut them down on defense led by goalies Will Cummings and Brian Feeney while a balanced offense poured in a tournament high 9 goals on their way to a surprising 9 – 3 win.

Elite earned themselves a spot in the Final Four against Mesa, another Pennsylvania based team. Mesa scored 2 quick goals to put Elite on their heals early. Elite came back to tie the game at 2 – 2 before Mesa scored 3 straight goals to earn themselves a spot in the Championship against in-state rival Malvern Prep.

Elite travels to Downingtown, PA next week for the Brine/Upper Atlantic Championships.  .

April 26, 2008

The season is now almost half over and things have gotten pretty interesting. Delbarton avenged their 2007 season ending loss to Mt Lakes in a game that was never in doubt. Their big win was followed with an interesting out of state match-up Vs Georgetown Prep where The Wave played well but came up short. Chatham at 9-0 can no longer be considered anyone's sleeper and settles solidly into the #2 spot. The Morris County Championships will be interesting with Delbarton, Chatham, Mt Lakes & Madison in the top 4 of the Top 5 in the state. After the openinmg day loss, #15 Summit has won 8 straight including over previously unbeaten Mendham & #11 West Morris. Seton Hall Prep & Don Bosco have had their ups & downs but with big wins stay in the Top 20. Outside the Top 20 St Peters has played well with keeper W. Cummings including a big win over one loss Rutgers Prep. Pingry has played competitively in 2 "Games to Watch" but come up short against one loss S. Brunswick & Prep B rival Morristown-Beard. W. Hering had a hat trick in a weekend win for Watchung Hills over local rival Bernards. Westfield continues so show it's youth as it has struggled to get 2 wins but one was a competitve win over West Essex.

April 14, 2008

The season is now in full swing and there are a few teams who picked up where they left off and a few early surprises. Delbarton finished ranked #2 for 2007 after being upset by long time rival Mt Lakes in the T of C. The Wave has started off ranked #2 & has reeled off 5 straight wins including handing Summit their only loss of the season. Delbarton has also beaten #4 Ridgewood, #8 Don Bosco & Philadelphia area power Haverford School. They have a big game this week Vs #1 Mt Lakes. Chatham is also 5 - 0 including a 15 - 5 rout of #7 Hunterdon Central. Seton Hall Prep started off 3 - 0 before getting tripped up in OT by Summit behind John Scoscia & the Feeney  brothers. #17 SHP sits at 4 - 1. St Peters and Pingry have both surprised in the early going. St Peters is 4 - 1 with its only loss coming at the hands of Don Bosco. Pingry dropped its opener by a goal but has won 3 straight including a surprising 12 - 5 thrashing of rival # 15 Ridge. As usual Big Blue has used a stingy defense including Spencer Topf and Dylan Westerhold time to give their young offense a chance to gell. There's likely to be some new names in the Top 20 this week since Summit and Pingry have only one loss each and big wins over Top 20 teams. Westfield has also surprised by going 0 - 5 but 4 losses have been to ranked opponents. The lone exception was Pingry but that was their annual Army - Navy type affair for the Bristol Cup in honor of Toni Bristol a long time coach at both Westfield and Pingry. Westfield is always good so don't count them out yet.

New Jersey Elite reaches Final Four at the Upper Atlantic Championships in Downingtown, PA

 June 9 2007

Mountain Lakes shocks Number 1 Delbarton 13 - 11

Rather than keep one of the most powerful offenses ever assembled under wraps with a strong defense, the plan was to keep the offense out of the game with a patient offense and execution that would have made Princeton proud. Mt Lakes worked hard all day to run an offense to perfection that would give them the best look at the cage. Delbarton's offense wasn't held in check with 11 goals but the Laker defense provided enough cushion for the win. The usual suspects from Delbarton contributed, the McBrides & Seligman's but Lakes worked even harder to put themselves in a position to outgun the powerful defending champion & old rival.

Congratulations to the seniors on both teams for a great game & a terrific career. Best wishes next year to NJ Elite graduating seniors Jack & Chris McBride (Princeton), Max & Cam Seligman (Georgetown/Bucknell) Matt Schillings (Loyola) John Collet (Bucknell) Pat Coleman (Yale) Neil Murphy (Hamilton) & T.J. O'Donnell (Villanova)

June 7 2007

DELBARTON ROLLS INTO T of C FINAL
Led by senior attackman Jack McBride's 5 goals, Delbarton hammered Montgomery 17 - 7 to set up a date with very familiar foe Mt Lakes. McBride got help from Chris McBride, Matt Schillings & the  Seligmann twins as well as a nasty defense. Delbarton faces the Lakers at Rutgers on Saturday in a rematch of the 2004 T of C Championship. Good luck to all the seniors on both teams.

Defending Champion Pingry falls to Immaculata 9 - 5 - Delbarton rolls past CBA 14 - 5

Defending Champion Pingry gave Immaculata a much different look then when they were routed 2 weeks ago but in the end it wasn't enough. Immaculata held a 1 - 0 lead after one period & a 5 - 2 lead at the half owing as much to Pingry mistakes as Immaculata's ability to take advantage of them. Pingry gave IHS all they could handle but each time Pingry would get within 2 goals IHS came back to cushion their lead. Congratulations to Elite seniors Robbie Ventura & Kim Kimber for their outstanding careers.

Defending Champion Delbarton had no such trouble defending their Non-Public A title as they crushed CBA. The game was never in doubt as Delbarton opened the game at full throttle & took an 8 - 1 lead before CBA could take a deep breath.

Delbarton gets a bye in the first round of the Tournament of Champions.

 May 30 2007

Good luck to our players in their state championship games this week

Non-Public A: Delbarton Vs CBA
Non-Public B: Pingry Vs Immaculata
